“Every human has four endowments – self-awareness, conscience, independent will and creative imagination. These four endowments give us the ultimate human freedom.. The power to choose, to respond, to change.”—Stephen Covey. Have you ever asked yourself if you are an independent person? Have you ever wondered why is it necessary to be an independent person? And what does it mean to be an independent person? Being independent is proved to be a vital skill for those people who want to be more in control of their lives; plus, feeling that they are not in need for others to accomplish their goals. Being capable of doing it all by yourself; that is called responsible freedom! Therefore, in our article, we are going in introduce for you some of the most important steps of how to be independent.
1. Think Independently.
• Accept yourself.
Accepting and living with yourself is the very first thing you should do in order to build a strong and independent personality. It all comes from within to without; not only accepting your inner self which includes your personality, your opinions, your choices, your preferences, and your life story, but also your body. Yes! you should accept your body because it is an integral part of the whole. Stop saying things against yourself. Moreover, put all of your mistakes behind and learn from them. Plus, love yourself.
• Believe in yourself.
Believing in yourself makes you feel way better and much stronger. We are all different and have something unique to say. No one can speak the same words you have in mind and not everyone is going to agree with what you say; that is why it is of high importance for you to stand by who you are. Furthermore, believing in yourself will make you trust your own decisions – whatever they are.
• Accept the world.
Independent people are those who see the world, accept it with all its good and its bad, and willingly choose to be strong for themselves and others. Plus, you are never going to be independent unless you do trust people around you. In addition, you will not be independent as long as you keep thinking highly of yourself.
• Stop caring about what other people think.
This is considered to be the most important thing about being independent. As long as you depend on others, for example, to tell you if your music is cool, or your outfit is cute, you will never reach happiness! However, if you like it – nothing else matters! Stop worrying about other people’s opinion about your life; since it is your own life, you are totally free to do whatever you like as long as it does not harm or hurt anyone. These are your decisions, your choices and your dreams—not anyone else’s; you are responsible for them.
2. Acting More Independent.
• Maintain solid friendships.
Throwing away your friends to be independent is not a good idea at all. As a matter of fact, your independence is strengthened with good friends. When any of your friends needs someone to talk to, someone who can listen to them; just be the one. Being trustworthy and loyal enhance the trust you have built with your friends. Moreover, gossiping or telling anyone about your friends’ secrets or private matters are believed to be very bad issue, since you might lose any of your good friends. Plus, you should be a strong person so that you can help your friends and loved ones. You will also learn how to cope with any situation that crosses your way—thanks to your friends’ experiences!
• Become financially independent.
It is really tempting to depend on others financially; however, earning your living and getting enough money to lead your life is such an amazing feeling! You should be rational and wise in saving and spending your own money; that is what we call “Secure your finances”. In fact, true independent living, highly depends on financial freedom. Pay your own bills, drive your own car, sign a personal check for your rent; certainly, if you have the money for these expenses. If you do not, save aggressively! It is such an incredible feeling to be in control.
• Don’t settle for anything, for comfort, for ease, or to “be nice”.
Working hard at everything you do is an essential condition. Defend your opinions and stand by your own decisions, and for you women, never let a man feel he has any control over you. If you are 100% sure that you are capable of doing something good, then do it so long as it doesn’t have any bad effects! Definitely, you won’t be able to do everything, yet only the things that relate to you; you should never rely on other people to do them for you.
• Dump the bad influences in your life.
Start avoiding those people who only spread negative energy, and start looking for those who can make you feel alive! Positive people do exist, you only have to search well and select very carefully. Avoidance does not mean to delete those particular people from your life, it only means that you should learn to keep a healthy distance. In fact, that is what we call “Weed out your garden”; some people make you shine, while others will blow off your growth and draw all your energy. Any friend who makes you feel uncomfortable, whether it is stealing your energy or just being a mean person, it is the right time to cut the cord.
3. Navigating the World More Independently.
• Learn to drive or navigate public transportation.
If you do not know how to drive or even how to get around on your own, you won’t be fully independent. You cannot call yourself independent if you always rely on your boyfriend, best friend, or parents to drive you around. Therefore, you have to work yourself hard in order to have a driving license and your own beautiful car!
• Do your own research instead of asking other people for help all the time.
You can have the help of others, but you cannot depend upon it totally; you have to have the greatest part of any task and be wholly responsible for it. You might have many people who are experts at what they are doing whether it is your friend, your parents or your neighbor; it does not really matter. However, you have to take a habit of doing your own research before you call these people if you want to be more independent.
• Learn to be handy around the house.
Having the capacity to solve any problem physically is such a skill anyone can acquire, and it absolutely makes you much more independent! Therefore, learning to be handy by watching useful videos, reading from specialized websites, having lessons from someone you know, or reading Popular Mechanics would be a very essential element that contributes to shaping the identity of an independent. Having the knowledge of how to fix up your own space will make you save lots of money and you get this fresh feeling that you do not need to wait around for others to make your life better anymore.
• Cook for yourself.
It does not mean that you have to be a master chef to feel like you understand the basics of cooking: how to sauté basic foods, how to use your oven, and how to cook simple dishes like pasta, potatoes, and salad. Plus, having the knowledge of going to the supermarket or farmer’s market, and picking up a few necessary ingredients as well as mixing them together to have a delicious meal will definitely make you feel that you are fully capable of doing anything on your own.
In conclusion, nothing will ever stop you if you truly work hard to meet the best results possible! In addition, as Charlotte Bronte says, “I am no bird; and no net ensnares me; I am a free human being with an independent will.” and as Ho Chi Minh believes: “Nothing is more precious than independence and liberty.”
