How to Remove Gum from Clothes: Check these Tips4 min read


One of the terrible problems related to cleaning clothes is removing the gums from garments. Yes, right! Despite of all the attempts to remove it and clean the clothes, that dreaded gum is still there.

Fortunately, we gathered for you a few useful tips and home remedies to help you get rid of gums on the clothes without spending much efforts and time. How To Remove Gums From Clothes


Here we mention easy tips to remove gums from clothes without leaving any stains or deteriorating the garment or the fabric and its colors:


1- Ironing

Obviously, we have to start with one of the most popular techniques to remove gum from clothes, it is ironing.

Put your piece of clothes on a cardboard, but make sure that the gum is located between the fabric and the cardboard.
Iron the affected area repeatedly till the gum is transferred from the clothe to the cardboard.
Wash the clothes to be sure that gum is totally removed.

2- Boiling

Another effective way to remove the gum from clothes is boiling.
Just put the dirty clothe in a very hot water.

Remove the gum using a toothbrush, knife or putty knife.
Scrub the fabric gently with your fingernail to remove everything left.

Leave the garment till it dry, then repeat again if there is anything particles left.

3- Freezing

Freezing is one of the best ways to remove the gum from clothes. Just follow these steps:

Fold the garment so you are able to see the gum.

Put the garment or fabric in a bag without letting the gum stick to the bag.

Close the bag tightly and put it in the freezer.

Wait for 2- 3 hours till the gum freezes.
Remove the bag from the freezer then open it and remove your clothes.
Use your hand, or a dull knife to peel the gum off the clothes quickly to avoid cutting the fabric.

Note: make sure to act quickly to not allow the gum to thaw out or you will have to out it again in the freezer.


4- Rubbing Alcohol

Rubbing alcohol is very useful for delicate fabrics as it will not negatively affect the garment nor remove the colors.
Pour some rubbing alcohol on a sponge and rub the gum.

Wait few minutes as the alcohol needs few minutes to act.
Scrub the garment with a spatula or wooden spoon to remove the gum. Don’t worry as it will be much easier than normal.


5- Vinegar

Dip a toothbrush in the solution then use it to rub the gum

Among all its benefits, vinegar is amazing for removing gums.
Start with putting a cup of vinegar in the microwave or on the stove.

Take it out when it becomes hot.

Dip a toothbrush in the solution then use it to rub the gum.
Repeat the dipping and rubbing technique till the gum is completely gone.

6- Liquid Laundry Soap

This amazing kind of soaps works perfectly with gums.
Put a big amount of liquid laundry soap on the area affected by the gum.
Scrub gently with a toothbrush to break it up.
Finally, scrape any remaining particles of the gum with your fingernail.

Wash the garment in a washing machine.


7- Label Remover

You can buy a label remover spray which is available in all stores to spray the area and remove the gum.
Leave the spray on the garment for 1 minute till the adhesive remover spray works.
Brush out the gum using a fine brass wire brush.
Clean the area again with some soap to clean it.

There are many other techniques which can be used to remove gums like orange oil, peanut butter, hair spray, gasoline and many others, but we don’t recommend them as most of them may leave some stains on the clothes.
